Ikimi: Okorocha’s Amnesty To Don Waney’s Men, A Reckless Abuse of Executive Powers
A legal practitioner based in Warri, Barr. Oghenejabor Ikimi (Esq.), has described the amnesty granted Don Waney’s men as an action taken without recourse to the overall public interest, welfare and safety of indigenes of Imo State.
Ikimi in a press release made available to journalists added:
“I condemn same as a reckless abuse of Executive powers, since the decision was taken without recourse to public interest, welfare and safety of the people of Imo State, whom the incumbent Governor had sworn to protect.
“It is public knowledge that Don Waney’s Men are wanted by our security agencies for violent crimes ranging from murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful possession of fire arms and in particular the January 1st Don Waney’s killings in Omoku Community in Rivers State which claimed several lives with scores injured.”
He continued: “I therefore make bold to say that it is worrisome for a serving State Governor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria whose primary responsibility is to ensure the security and welfare of her citizens under Section 14 (2) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to have arrived at such an unpopular decision.”
I kimi asked: “Is Governor Rochas Okorocha telling our youths that it pays to engage in violent crimes?”
According to him, “the decision by the State Governor to grant amnesty to Don Waney’s Men is informed by selfish political reasons ahead of the 2019 General Elections in the State rather than overriding public interest, welfare and safety of Imolites.”
He called on the governor to rescind his decision, adding that in the overall interest of the state, he should ensure that “the said men are arrested and prosecuted for the alleged violent crimes committed by the gang for which they have been declared wanted by security agencies, since the alleged crimes are not political in nature, but are crimes against humanity.”
