A social critic, Comrade Ekakite Napoleon, has adduced the poor perception of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, image to the poor handling of the university’s Public Relations Unit.
Ekakite said over the years, the university has been appointing routine administration officers without background training in media activities, public relations or advertising.
He said, inter-alia: “All over the world, PR department of a university, like other tertiary institutions, is manned by seasoned media men who have either practiced as journalists, public relations or advertising so that they will be able to conceive and design public relations plans and execute it.
“But in this case, DELSU merely picks people because they perceive it as a mere routine transfer. The current PRO is the worst. He is clueless. He neither knows what public relations is all about nor does he take time to explain to the public certain controversial issues that involve the university.
“For instance, when Elozino was murdered by suspected “Yahoo Yahoo” ritualists back in November 2018, it took the university over two weeks before it was able to give its own perspective and that left much to be desired.”
He stressed the need for the management of the university to rejig its public relations unit by appointing seasoned persons into the position in order to be at par with other universities in the country.
“Most of the PR departments in the western parts of the country are manned by seasoned journalists; those who know what it takes to create good relations between the media and the university and between the university and the public.”
