Uzum Decries Increasing Rate Of Insecurity, Calls For Community Policing

Director-General of the Delta State Orientation Bureau, Eugene Azuka Uzum, has decried the increasing rate of insecurity in the state and beyond.
Uzum stated this in Asaba during the regular phone-in radio programme of the bureau with the Delta Broadcasting Service, ’Wetin Government Dey Do’, on the topic, “Insecurity and Community Policing.”
The orientation helmsman, who spoke through the Public Relations Officer in the bureau, Mr. Johnson Ebigide, said that the Governor of the State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, placed very high premium on the safety of lives and properties of residents in the state and beyond.
According to Uzum, the security summit hosted by the state government had thrown up various security issues, requiring urgent attention, including the introduction of community policing as a panacea to the rising spates of insecurity in the country.
He enjoined community leaders in the state to liaise with the state police command and the traditional rulers to form a community vigilante team in each community to complement the efforts of the conventional police in the state.
Mr. Uzum, a lawyer, said that the choice of who would be a member of such team should be hinged on sparkling integrity among other conditions, just as he advised against the use of jungle justice in the determination of issues by such community security outfits.
Several callers from the state and beyond enjoined government at all levels to step up community policing, towards stemming the unfortunate rise of criminality and insecurity in the country.
