The immediate past Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Non indigenous affairs, Hon. Francis Onuora, has said Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has failed Nigerians.

Hon. Onuora stated this over the weekend in a chat with newsmen in his office in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State.

He said that despite the different colourations or assumption of names occasioned by different hands that have handled power in the country, National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) to Power Holding of Nigeria (PHCN) and now Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), the agency has not improved its performances by making power available for Nigerians.for use for both domestic and industrial based solutions, rather it has worsened its performances.

He said many Nigerians have been frustrated out of businesses due to epileptic or total absence of power in the country, adding that domestic use of power is near zero as many people do not have light to sleep and for other domestic uses.

He said it has become clear that the more people cry of the absence of light in their area, the more light is not seen, noting that electricity consumers dare not complain and that even if they do there will be no effect.

The existence of prepaid meter does not help either as many who pay or have paid for prepaid meter never see it to use.

He stated that many communities in the country including Delta State are suffering due to lack of electricity in many places.

Hon. Onuora said if the word corruption is mentioned in Nigeria, BEDC is number one. adding that with the attitude of the agency it is duping Nigerians just as he said that by now, one would have expected that its licence of operations would have been withdrawn and not re- registered for operation because it has failed Nigerians.

Hon Onuora who is also a sport equipment merchant close to Giniwa junction berated the agency for its failure and therefore tasked it to live up to expectation.

He said: “BDEC is a total failure, it is only robbing Deltans and Nigerians generally since it enjoys in defrauding Nigerians by bringing about estimated bills.

He cited a case where anyone who applies for meter, never gets it.

He added that they extort Deltans nay Nigerians with their operation, saying that if one thinks the way they( BDEC) handle Nigeria, one would shed tears.

Hon Onuora said because of corruption which is ravaging the country hence the contract of power is still renewed to the same person(s) who have failed to deliver to specification for Nigeria in this regard and alleged that they always settle behind close doors.

He said If the government means well for its citizens, it should revoke the contract, saying that right now, as far he was concerned, BEDC is a failed project and that unless the government does something, Nigerians would continue to suffer in the hands of BEDC.

He said: “If a contract is awarded to a person and the person is not doing it well, you have to revoke the contract otherwise Nigerians would think that the government is taking side with the agency.

“Doesn’t the government see what is going on right now, why not revoke the contract?”

He said the government should revoke the present handler power if it is sincere to Nigerians or better still it should define how BEDC would treat the citizens.

He added that when revoked before contracting out such an important firm to any company, it (Government) should set a guide to monitor the agency in question.

Hon. Onuora said Nigerians see BEDC now as an oil well, stressing that this ought not to be because everyone needs light.
