A first class graduate of Delta State University, Abraka, Miss Perpetual Onyinyechukwu Igwe, who graduated with first class honours from the department of Microbiology, has narrated how she hawked groundnut, smoked fish, local seasoning popularly called “ogiri” to support her education.

Miss Igwe, who is the second child of her mother’s six children, said she never knew she would make it to the university due to the level of hardship she was faced with following the death of her father when she was just 11 years old.

Born and bred in Ichi community, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, her parents Mr. Simeon Igwe and Mrs Elizabeth Mmasinachi Igwe, are natives of Umuhuali, in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

In a few words, the young lady who is in her early twenties recounted the difficult times she experienced in school after gaining admission in 2015.

Speaking with our reporter, Miss Igwe had this to say…
“The year I gained admission, things were so tough for us that my mother and I contemplated deferring the admission.
“That was how my mother switched from Fish business to start local production and sales of ‘ogiri’. When I finally found myself in the University I resolved that I must come out as one of the best. If not for anything, to assuage my mother’s suffering.”

The school authorities of Delta State University Abraka and the Ebonyi State Government seem to be unaware of this academic achievement because nothing has been done to honour the young intellectual. Alongside two other students from the Department of Microbiology, Miss Igwe, finished with First Class Honours, accumulating a total CGPA of 4.58.

After completing her NYSC in October, 2020, the academic genius is currently surviving with her baking and confectionery skills which she acquired while in school.

“I make beautiful cakes and pastries but the confectionery business demands a lot of utensils and equipment that I cannot presently afford.

“I wish to get sponsorship for Master’s Degree in any University within or outside Niger. This will improve my chances of applying for a job as a graduate assistant in any school.

“I am profoundly grateful to God for how far he has brought me. I desire any kind of support to further my education and support family, especially my mother as she is getting old.

I am pleading with Gov. David Nweze Umahi and other well-meaning Nigerian to assist me.
