School Fees: DELSU VC Condemns Calls For Protests, Says The Reduction Covers Only Increased Charges, Not Gross

Vice Chancellor, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has condemned agitations by one Obaro Stephen Alagun (Aluta Apostle)
who alleged that the university management has jettisoned the agreement reached with student leaders for a 15% reduction of the increased school fees and thus vowed to lead a protest if the university fails to implement the reduction by close of work on Monday.

Speaking to Oasis Magazine (OM) via a telephone conversation, Egwunyenga said: “Some parts of the school fees initially were not increased and so not affected in the reduction. In our minutes it was a 15 percent reduction for those components that were increased.
You can’t reduce what has been so for years.”

Asked what is message is to those that misunderstand the 15 percent is and think that the university has reneged on the agreement, he said: ”Nobody misunderstood anything. The person who published and is agitating was not a part of the discussions, but an ignoramus who wants to be heard. He was not a signatory to the meeting.”

According to the VC, some persons have vested political interests and want to be used, saying that they will end up causing troubles for themselves.

“Students should not allow themselves to be misled and used,” he said.

Furthermore, in a statement forwarded to OM, the VC added: “We have effected 15% reduction of all increased charges in the school fees schedule. You cannot reduce any part of the school fees that wasn’t increased in the first place. Students understand this clarification. The author of your report wasn’t a party in the discussion. He needs to be properly educated.”

Meanwhile, feelers from the university community said the institution will shut for at least 6 months if students buy into the idea of a protest over what our sources said is unnecessary since the agreement reached between the management and the student representatives has not been breached.
