The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Delta State, has frowned at the decision of the management of Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic to hike tuition fees and also condemned what the body described as the unruly extortion going on in Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, where graduating students were compelled to pay #5,000 for certificate folder, adding that this was a way of “illegally continuing the COVID-19 facility upgrade fee that was originally agreed for only one (2020/2021) session between State Government, management and Students leadership hierarchy.”

A statement signed by Chairman of NANS in the state, Comr Madjemite Precious, said: “As a responsive and responsible leadership of the highest students governing body in the State, we urge our students to be law abiding and go about their normal academic activities as we are on top of the matter.”

NANS Delta continued: “We therefore urge the managements of the affected Institutions to kindly retrace their steps, or attract the wrath of law abiding but Aluta conscious Nigerian students spread across the State.

“Our demand is simple, desist from such attempt of extortion and increasing tuition fees to the detriment of our students, at a time like this when the economy is not smiling on the ordinary and struggling Nigerian Students.”

The association also alleged “signs of public sell-out/betrayal by some SUG’s of these Institutions.”

“Although this is not alien to the struggle, as a responsive leadership, we wish to warn categorically, anyone who attempts to sell-out on the struggle for emancipation of our students, that such a fellow will have all Nigerian Students in Delta State to contend with,” NANS warned.

The statement also called on the managements of the affected institutions to immediately reverse such decisions in the next 72 hours “or be ready to host the Aluta Secretariat of NANS in the affected respective Institutions.”
