Chairman, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State branch, Comrade Jonathan Giama, has appealed to the Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed, to order the release of two brothers, Freeborn Kano and Emmanuel Kano arrested in connection with the murder of a police officer in Ovwian who was killed in a hotel and his rifle taken away.

In a statement made available to Oasis Magazine, Giama, while condemning the murder of the police officer, urged the Delta state Police Command to bring the perpetrators to book, adding that “the Police already have a lead to the killer of the officer who was shot dead while on duty in a hotel; they also made away with his rifle.”

According to the statement, based on claims of members of the family of Kano, their son, Emmanuel Kano who just got married on Thursday, 17th March is supposed to perform his wedding today, Saturday, 19th March, 2022.

He added that the elder brother of the two arrested, Walter Kano, said that after Emmanuel’s traditional rites on the 17th of March, while he was been escorted to his father’s compound with his wife, was shot on his leg after he heard gunshots all over his father’s compound that they later discovered was done by men of the Nigeria Police Force and Vigilante group who shot sporadically into the air and directly to the people in the compound while in search of the killers of the police.

He continued: “Immediately after the shooting, Walter said he noticed that his younger brother, a stray bullet hit Emmanuel’s 3-year-old son, Kendrick.”

Furthermore, he said that the police attached to Ovwian Division also arrested Freeborn who happened to have carried Emmanuel in his car from the marriage ground to the house, adding that immediately, they were transferred to the Delta State Police Command, Asaba.

He said: “Walter also told me that they were told at the Police Station that Emmanuel killed a police man in a hotel some weeks ago and made away with his rifle. Walter said that immediately they realized that there was a mix up somewhere by the Nigeria Police, as they mistook his brother Avabore Justice Kano popularly known as Don Q who has questionable character to be Emmanuel Kano who is well behaved. Walter told me that Emmanuel and Justice look identical with the same height, same movement style and lots of resemblance. They have since written their statements to the Police at Ovwian division.”

He continued: “I categorically want to state that it is out of place to arrest someone who did not commit a crime in the place of another.”

He added that they were told that the Police at Ovwian division said that that “they should provide their son, Avabore Justice Kano also known as Don Q who committed the crime so as to vindicate their brothers in police custody at the State command.”

Furthermore, he said he was not apportioning blame to the Nigeria Police for arresting on proxy, but in strong terms called for proper investigation since the suspect in their custody, Emmanuel simply has strong resemblance with the primary suspect, Justice Kano, adding that since the Police already know these facts, are in the wrong and thus out of place to hold someone in detention in the place of another person who committed the crime.”

He concluded that putting all the facts together have made him come out with this press statement and calling on the police to do the needful.
