Idamoyibo: ASUU-DELSU Reacts, Calls On DTSG To Investigate Kidnap, Death Of Lecturer

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), Delta State University, Abraka Branch, has reacted to the kidnap and death of the Head of Music Department, Professor Ovaborhene Idamoyibo, saying the government has failed to protect staff of the institution.

Recall that the lecturer who was kidnapped along Eku -Abraka Express Road on Saturday, 9th April, 2022, died at the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara on Sunday 17th April, 2022 despite the #3 Million ransom that was paid to the kidnappers for his release.

In a statement signed by Crd G.O Demaki, Chairman and Crd P. Opone, Secretary, the Union said that “kidnapping has remained a recurring incident over the years in and around the University community in spite of appeals to Government to set up security network in the area.”

The statement added that “the cold blooded murder of Professor Ovaborhene In the hands of kidnappers is violation of the right to life as constitutionally enshrined In the Section 33(1) that no one shall be deprived intentionally of his right to life save in the execution of the sentence of a court in respect of criminal offence of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria.”

According to the statement, lives in Abraka as a University town and the environs have degenerated into a state that is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

They noted that the primary function of government is security and welfare of the people and thus called on the Delta State Government for a diligent and thorough investigation into the kidnap and subsequent cold blooded murder of Professor Ovaborhene to bring the kidnappers to justice.
