Activist Writes Open Letter To Okowa Over Insecurity In 25 LGAs

-Calls For State Police

A rights activist in Delta State, Activist Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, has said that the level of insecurity in the 25 local government areas of the state is worrisome.

He said this in an open letter to the governor.

While calling on Okowa to be responsive with necessary measures, he noted that the primary duty of Government is to ensure the security of lives and property.

He continued: “Government owes its citizens this obligation, and it is clearly enshrined in the constitution. The Delta State Government is not exempted. I wish to express my resentment about the recent trends in kidnappings and ransom collections, cult clashes, killings, herdsmen attack and other forms of violence in Sapele, Sapele-Benin Road, Udu, Warri, Agbarho and across other parts of the State.”
According to him, “the situation is very disturbing and has been a major cause for concern for well-meaning Deltans.”

“It is no longer news that Fulani herdsmen have seized parts of Delta communities in Obiaruku , Abraka, and Ughelli North. This invasion has been followed by the raping of our women and the gruesome killings of farmers. The loitering of different areas of the State by Northern youths who, we are made to believe, are job seekers, is another worrying situation,” he said.

Continuing, the fearless activist said that “with the accent of kidnappers, having the northern colouring, it will not be hasty to say that these Northern youths have connections with the lingering issue of kidnapping.”

“They know the terrains very well, hence they can convey information to kidnappers. The recent attacks on police officers by unknown gunmen, is another event that foregrounds how the issue of insecurity in Delta State has worsened. It is disheartening how the Delta State Government has been indifferent to the pains of its people. It is really saddening and shocking,” he said.

He opined that “there are remedial measures that can be taken to totally surmount this challenge or to curb it,’ saying: “I am suggesting that the Delta State Government creates State policing in all the local governments across the State.”

:”State policing in the form of Amotekun, a traditional security outfit in the South-West. This step will bring security nearer to the people unlike the Operation Delta Hawk that seems to be distant from the people.

“Your Excellency, Sir, I am sure that now that these disturbing issues have been brought to your notice again, you will respond promptly and aptly to them. Deltans await a satisfactory reaction,” his letter added.
