58 Bag First Class, As DELSU Holds 15th Convocation

Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), on Saturday awarded academic certificates, diplomas and degrees to a total of four thousand, eight hundred and fifty-five (4, 855) graduands.

This is as the University held her 15th convocation ceremony for 2021/2022 Academic Session at the institution’s Convocation Arena.

Speaking during the occasion, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, Vice-Chancellor, said that by this year’s Convocation, DELSU has reverted to the culture and tradition of annual convocation ceremony which was disrupted in 2020 by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While giving the breakdown of graduands as 3,843 -First Degrees, 596- Postgraduate Degrees and 416 –Diplomas, he said that a total of 58 graduating students bagged first class, adding that Obuseh  Emmanuel Ewere of Electrical/Electronic Engineering emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student with a C.G.P.A of 4.91.

Furthermore, Egwunyenga said that the “university has kept faith its mandate of producing quality graduates who will contribute to nation building and advance the cause of humanity globally.”

Continuing, he commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his role in funding the institution, while calling on the Delta State Government to assist in increasing the number of teaching and non-teaching staff and tackling other challenges, just as he lamented the delay in completing the Administrative Building, adding that the abandoned Sports Complex and the Faculty of Science Complex are waiting for attention and completion.

Earlier, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council said that a Convocation Ceremony affords a University the opportunity to showcase the scorecard of the institution within the period which the ceremony covers.

Speaking further, he appreciated the staff and student unions for cooperating with the University Management as “eloquently evidenced from the pervading atmosphere of peace and tranquility in the University.”

Meanwhile, he saluted Governor Okowa for his courage to establish three new universities, saying “the investment is a worthwhile venture.”

On his part, Sen. Okowa ably represented by Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, Commissioner for Higher Education, said that DELSU is at its best under the leadership of Prof. Egwunyenga and Prof. Oyovbaire.

He applauded the Vice-Chancellor for always keeping at heart the Principal Educational Values and above all thanked him for providing the students the basic requirement for academic excellence as shown in different Award Categories.

Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of Award/ Prizes to the graduands.

Dignitaries that graced the occasion include Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, Prof. Sam Oyovbare, Prof. Andy O. Egwunyenga and Hon. Charles Emetulu, Delta State House of Assembly Member, representing Ndokwa West Local Government.

Others are Prof. Mrs Rosemary N. Okoh (Deputy Vice- Chancellor – Administration/Chairman, Convocation Committee, Prof. Ochuko Anomohanran (Dep. Vice-Chancellor -Academics, Mrs. Rufina U. Ufiofio (Registrar), Prof.  Elo Ibagere (Provost, Oleh Campus), Mrs Otimeyin Omajuwa-Ekakitie (Bursar), Prof. Stephen O. Uwaifo (Librarian) and Prof. Ebele Joyce Egwunyenga (Director of Centre for Gender Studies and Development)

Royal fathers present included the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, His Majesty, Orhue 1, Major Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd) and Ovie of Oruarivie Abraka Kingdom, HRM Akpomeyoma Majoroh, Ojeta II.
