Rights Activist Calls For Training, Retraining Of Policemen In Delta, Condemns Extortion Of FUPRE Student

A rights activist in Delta State, Comr. Derrick Oritsematosan has said that police officers in the state need training and retraining, while condemning the #500,000.00 extortion from one Mr. Williams Olanrewaju; a Student of FUPRE by the Nigeria Police in Warri two(2) days ago by operatives from the Delta State Command.

Recall that the money has since been recovered.

In a statement on Monday, he said that the trend has became worrisome to him.

“The masses cannot afford to contend with two things at the same time; negligence by the government(Failed System) and frustration by the Nigeria Police Officers, especially the rank and files,” he opined.

Stating that almost all Nigerians are feeding from crime/corruption in one way or another, he noted that there are Institutions or agencies who must not participate in it.

Adding: “There are institutions saddled with the responsibility to protect and serve humanity and as such, should uphold integrity with modesty.”

According to him, security operatives, health workers and teachers are vital professions because they play important roles in nation building, saying that the reverse is the case in today’s society.

He continued: “As an activist, I have never posted issues/cases of Police extortion despite several money recovered on daily/weekly basis from Police Officers across the States, because it has a way of denting the image of the Nigeria Police to the in, and outside world.

“In developed countries, the police, teachers and health service workers are the highest and are well paid profession because of what its job entails, just as he said that it is a service to humanity and mostly sacrificial.

“It is obvious that the Federal Government and the IGP/ Police Service Commission(PSC) have so much to explain to Nigerians about the welfare of the Nigeria Police Officers during and after service to her nation and why they take so much pleasure in frustrating, extorting and brutalizing Nigerians despite the hardship inflicted on the masses by the government,” he said.

Speaking further, the rights activist said: “As one of the demands from the #EndSars Protest, we sued for the Federal Government to increase salaries of the Nigeria Police Personnel’s and adequately compensate them for protecting lives and property of the citizens. You can not entrust firearms to the Nigeria Police and not treat them fairly but expect a crime free society. This led to the Federal Government delegating the State Government to constitute a Judicial Panel of Inquiry across the 36 States.”

Derrick wondered why up till this very moment, the Delta State Government is yet to publish reports from the Judicial Panel of Inquiry with its recommendations made to the State/ Federal Government; to appropriately punish Police Officers indicted and found wanting on cases of Police brutality and others.

“Therefore, the Delta State Police Command
through the newly deployed Commissioner of Police; CP Wale Abass and the Delta State/Federal Government should review and readdress issues of Police extortion and others in the State, as, it is taking a new dimension and as such, poses threat to a peaceful society. There’s also urgent need for the Commissioner of Police; CP Wale Abass to organize training and retraining exercise for proper orientation to Junior and Senior Police Officers in the Divisions, Areas/ State Commands,” he concluded.
