Illegal Detention: Delta Court Awards N800, 000 To Commercial Driver Against Police

The Delta State High Court sitting at Effurun has awarded the sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N800, 000) in favour of one Mr. Harrison Oji for his arrest and detention by police officers in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area, in the state.

Barr. Omemiroro Ogedegbe who disclosed this in a statement, said “the applicant is a University graduate who due to unemployment went into commercial transportation.”

According to his statement, “sometime in August, 2022, he got a waybill to deliver a parcel at Abraka and upon his arrival he called the contact person. The contact person immediately claimed the number belongs to their sister who was robbed of the phone.”

He said that Oji was detained at the station till the next day.

Continuing, he said that the driver “has been using the said line from his University and NYSC days as same was used to open his account in the camp.”

“He provided his BVN and bank details to show and the complainant upon realizing their error abandoned their complaint and the applicant filed the action against the police and the said Abigail Stanley wherein the court presided over by Honourable justice Emmanuel Dolor held that the detention was unlawful and the victim entitled to compensation,” he said.
