Two To Die By Hanging For Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Conspiracy In Delta

Delta State High Court 2 sitting at Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area has convicted and sentenced two persons, Theophilus Nwachukwu and Christopher Emeka Okoli, to death by hanging on five- count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery and illegal possession.

While presiding, the trial judge, Hon. Justice R. Harriman, upheld the prosecution arguments on merit against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.

A couple, Gabriel Adoghe and wife, who stood as norminal complainants in the matter alleged that the defendants had robbed them of the wife’s Honda car at gunpoint.

The complainants disclosed that the defendants became helpless when they met a police checkpoint at Aladja, where they got arrested, while Adoghe ( the husband) was still kept in the car booth.

However, the prosecution called the two victims and three policemen as witnesses at the trial.

But the the defendants on their part only testified in their defence but did not call any witnesses.

Delivering her judgment based on the evidence before the court, Justice Harriman held that the prosecution had proved on merit all the offences preferred against the defendants beyond any reasonable doubt.

In his response, the prosecution counsel, Theophilus E. Omenuwoma, an Assistant Director in the State Ministry of Justice, expressed satisfaction with the court’s verdict.

He also noted that “the defendants were charged to court on five-count charges bordering on Count 1, Conspiracy that gave them seven years imprisonment, Count 2, kidnapping, 10 years imprisonment, Count 3/4 armed robbery, to death by hanging while Count 5, illegal possession which earned them 10 years imprisonment, respectively.”

The prosecution counsel called on Nigerian youths to refrain from heinous crimes and be committed to productive ventures.
