NDPC Imposes N766.2M Fine On Multichoice Nigeria For Breaching Data Protection Act

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has imposed a penalty of N766.2 million on Multichoice Nigeria for breaching the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act).

The Commission revealed in an announcement issued on Sunday, signed by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations.

The Commission reports that it began investigating Multichoice in the second quarter of 2024 due to concerns about potential violations of its subscribers’ privacy rights and the unauthorized international transfer of personal data belonging to Nigerians.

Multichoice Nigeria has been given a timeframe to pay the fine, but it is also reported that they may appeal the decision. The company has not yet issued a public statement regarding the fine, but it is expected that they will address the situation in due course.

The NDPC has been actively increasing its enforcement of data protection regulations in Nigeria, and this fine against Multichoice Nigeria is the latest example of this intensified effort. The commission has also collected fines from other companies for data breaches and has indicated a willingness to impose further penalties on organizations that fail to comply with data protection laws.
