Libya Records First AI-Powered Oil Drilling Operation

Libya has successfully executed its first artificial intelligence (AI)-driven oil drilling operation, marking a significant technological milestone in the country’s energy sector.

The breakthrough was achieved by the Sirte Oil Company, a subsidiary of the National Oil Corporation, at the Al-Khair oil field.

According to reports, the operation utilized advanced AI-powered directional drilling technology developed by SLB (Schlumberger), enabling automated well placement and real-time geosteering without constant human intervention.

The AI system was able to analyze underground geological data instantly and adjust drilling direction accordingly, resulting in improved accuracy and efficiency.

Notably, the operation achieved a significant increase in drilling speed, with performance reportedly doubling compared to conventional methods.

Industry observers say the development represents the first AI-driven drilling project in Libya and one of only a few globally, highlighting the country’s gradual shift toward digital oilfield technologies.

Experts believe that wider adoption of AI in drilling operations could reduce operational costs, improve safety, increase production efficiency and enhance precision in oil extraction.

The move aligns with broader initiatives by Libya’s oil authorities to integrate digital solutions and attract foreign expertise into the sector.
