DELSU’s Rise Continues: VC Calls For Unity, Highlights Infrastructure Boost

The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has called on staff, students, and stakeholders to remain committed to the growth and unity of the institution as it continues to advance in development and academic excellence.

He made this call during the 18th Pre-Convocation Thanksgiving Mass held at St. Paul Catholic Chaplaincy, Delta State University Abraka, on Sunday, 26th of April 2026, themed “The Good Shepherd” (John 10:14).

Addressing members of the university community, Prof. Asagba described the occasion as one of gratitude, emphasizing the importance of thanking God for both personal and institutional progress.

“Today is a day of thanksgiving. We are here to thank God for many things, both personal and for the university,” he said, noting that DELSU, founded in 1992, has grown significantly over its 32-year existence.

“The university has come a long way… it is no longer a little child. It has witnessed phenomenal growth and undergone several transformations,” he added, attributing the institution’s stability and progress to divine grace.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted DELSU’s relatively peaceful academic environment, contrasting it with experiences from other universities, and described the institution as “a God-fearing place” that has been spared major crises over the years.

Reflecting on his personal journey within the university, Prof. Asagba recounted early experiences on campus, illustrating the transformation and development DELSU has undergone.

He also stressed the importance of legacy and service, urging staff to contribute meaningfully during their time in the institution.

“One day, we will all leave the system. The question is:What are we going to leave behind?” he asked, encouraging dedication, integrity, and focus among staff.

On leadership, the Vice Chancellor underscored qualities such as patience and integrity while cautioning against distractions.

He reaffirmed his commitment to a clear vision for the university and acknowledged that leadership decisions may not always please everyone.

Addressing infrastructural challenges, particularly power supply, Prof. Asagba disclosed ongoing efforts to improve electricity through alternative energy solutions.

“We are working towards providing solar power that will ensure 24-hour electricity supply,” he revealed.

He further announced ongoing developments across the university, including the installation of fibre-optic internet services to enhance connectivity, refurnishing of lecture halls, and broader efforts to upgrade academic facilities.

“A situation where students are taking lectures and rain is beating them in the classroom is not ideal. We are committed to renovating and restoring our facilities,” he said.

Prof. Asagba commended the university’s ICT unit for simplifying processes for staff and students, noting that these improvements contribute to DELSU’s standing as a leading institution.

“It is not an accident that DELSU stands as number one university,” he stated.

While appealing for continued support from the university community, the Vice Chancellor also expressed openness to constructive criticism.

“If I’m not doing well, let me know. There is no need for quarrel,” he said.

He concluded by urging all stakeholders to remain loyal and committed to the institution.

“Let us always stand with DELSU and defend its interest,” he charged.

The thanksgiving service brought together lecturers, and other members of the university community in a solemn reflection ahead of the convocation ceremonies.
