DTHA Member, Omonade, Co-Sponsors Bill To Repeal 1977 Rent Law, Introduce New Landlord And Tenant Law

Member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ughelli North Constituency 1, Omonade Matthew, has announced via a Facebook post that he co-sponsored a bill seeking to repeal the outdated Rent Control Law of 1977 and replace it with a modern legal framework for tenancy in the state.

In the post on Wednesday, Omonade disclosed that the proposed legislation, titled the Landlord and Tenant Law of Delta State, 2025, is designed to address persistent issues in the housing sector, including arbitrary rent increases and the activities of exploitative agents.

He explained that the bill, when enacted, will protect tenants from unjust practices while also safeguarding landlords from manipulative tenants and unethical middlemen.

The lawmaker noted that the initiative is aimed at creating a fair and balanced system that benefits all parties involved in property transactions.

Describing the bill as a bold step toward justice and equity, Omonade emphasized that it reflects the commitment of the Delta State House of Assembly to protect vulnerable citizens and promote responsible tenancy.

He further stated that the move aligns with the legislative agenda of the 8th Assembly under the leadership of Emomotimi Guwor, which continues to prioritize reforms that improve the welfare of residents.

If passed into law, the bill is expected to usher in a more structured and equitable relationship between landlords and tenants across Delta State.
