No More Job Hunting: Oborevwori Urges DELSU Graduates To Build Their Own Opportunities

The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation as pathways to success in today’s evolving economy.

He made the call on Saturday at the 18th Convocation Ceremony of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, stressing that the era of automatic employment for graduates is over.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the Governor described convocation as both a celebration of academic achievement and a stepping stone into a highly competitive global environment.

Citing recent figures, Oborevwori noted that DELSU produced 5,109 graduates in the 2025 cycle, while universities across the state collectively graduated 8,362 students—numbers he said underscore the urgent need for graduates to think beyond job-seeking.

According to him, “the realities of today’s world compel us to rethink the purpose of university education. The modern economy rewards innovation, creativity, and adaptability.”

He emphasized the need for institutions to continually update their curricula to reflect modern demands, with a stronger focus on entrepreneurship, digital skills, and problem-solving abilities.

“Our graduates must be equipped not just to seek jobs, but to create them,” he said.

The Governor congratulated the 2024/2025 graduating set, describing their success as a product of discipline and perseverance, while urging them to remain resilient, ambitious, and guided by integrity as they step into the future.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the education sector through prompt salary payments, regular funding, and infrastructural development, noting that DELSU has maintained its reputation as a centre of academic excellence.

Oborevwori, however, called for greater collaboration among stakeholders—including corporate organizations, alumni, and individuals—to sustain growth in the education sector. He also urged university authorities to explore innovative ways of boosting internally generated revenue.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Samuel Asagba, disclosed that 107 graduands earned First Class honours.

He commended the state government for its support, particularly the completion of key infrastructure projects, consistent payment of salaries, and improved welfare for medical lecturers at DELSUTH, Oghara.

“These interventions, worth several billions of naira, are unprecedented in the history of our university,” Asagba said.

A breakdown of the graduating students shows that 5,109 earned First Degrees, 904 obtained Diplomas, 159 graduated through Affiliation programmes, while 181 received Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, 477 earned Master’s degrees, eight obtained Master of Philosophy, and 205 were awarded Postgraduate Diplomas.
