Ogodio-Axis Community in Abraka Raises Fresh Alarm Over Suspected Scrap Thieves

Residents of the Ogodio-Axis community in Abraka have again expressed concern over rising cases of theft linked to individuals suspected to be scavenging for condemned iron.

The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 7, when some youths allegedly entered a private residence within the area with the intention of stealing.

According to reports, a neighbour living close to a mansion belonging to Mr. Raphael Uwanoghor, an indigene of Urhuovie based in the United Kingdom, noticed unusual movement inside the building despite it being locked and promptly raised an alarm.

Community members quickly mobilised to the scene, leading to the arrest of one suspect, who was subsequently handed over to the police in Abraka for further investigation.

Residents described the development as troubling, noting that the attempted theft took place in a secured environment and targeted a well-known property.

During interrogation, the arrested suspect reportedly disclosed that he had an accomplice who was hiding in the ceiling of the building, waiting for an opportunity to escape with valuables. Efforts to apprehend the second suspect initially proved unsuccessful, as he later escaped through the roof, damaging sections of the ceiling and roofing sheets in the process.

Reacting to the incident, indigenes of Urhuovie community called on the Delta State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to curb the activities of such suspects and prevent further occurrences.

They lamented that beyond financial losses, the repeated acts of vandalism and theft have led to the destruction of buildings under construction, including the removal of electrical installations.
Some residents also raised serious concerns over past incidents, alleging that suspects had at times been found in possession of items linked to violent crimes. They urged authorities to treat the situation with urgency and ensure the safety of lives and property in the community.
