Kwankwasiyya Movement Warns Against Defamation Of Kwankwaso

Affirms Commitment To Democratic Criticism

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has declared that while it welcomes constructive criticism and democratic engagement, it will not tolerate what it described as false and defamatory attacks against its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, political competition, freedom of expression, and the right of Nigerians to hold differing political opinions.

The movement noted that Senator Kwankwaso, a former governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has remained one of Nigeria’s most scrutinized political figures throughout his decades of public service and has consistently demonstrated tolerance for criticism and opposition.

According to the statement, there is a clear distinction between legitimate political criticism and the deliberate spread of falsehoods intended to damage reputations, incite hatred, or mislead the public.

The group stressed that while it remains open to debates on policies, governance, ideology, and political performance, it would not remain silent in the face of what it described as malicious allegations and character assassination disguised as political commentary.

It warned that individuals or groups who knowingly publish false claims against Senator Kwankwaso or the movement should be prepared to defend such allegations through lawful channels.

The statement further emphasized that freedom of expression comes with responsibility and that public discourse should be based on facts, evidence, and honesty rather than misinformation and propaganda.

The movement stated that it would pursue all legal remedies available against anyone found deliberately spreading false and malicious allegations, regardless of their status or position in society.

“No individual is above the law. No office is too high. No position is too influential,” the statement said, adding that politicians, clerics, traditional rulers, media personalities, and other public figures would not be exempt from legal action if they engage in defamation.

The group maintained that its position should not be interpreted as opposition to criticism, insisting that it remains receptive to sincere observations and constructive engagement aimed at strengthening democratic culture.

The movement also highlighted Senator Kwankwaso’s role in the NDC since emerging as the party’s vice-presidential candidate, noting that he has focused on expanding the party’s presence, particularly across Northern Nigeria, while fostering unity among diverse political, religious, and ethnic groups.

It commended the working relationship between Kwankwaso and the NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, describing their collaboration as a source of renewed hope for Nigerians seeking an alternative political direction.

According to the statement, the growing popularity of Senator Kwankwaso and the increasing acceptance of the NDC have unsettled some political interests, leading to what it called a campaign of misinformation, distortion, and personal attacks.

The movement, however, said such actions would not distract it from its mission of promoting good governance, social justice, national unity, and national development.

It urged political actors and public commentators to embrace responsible, issue-based discourse as Nigeria prepares for another democratic transition, while reaffirming its commitment to advancing the welfare and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
