Engineering Innovation Key To Nigeria’s Security, Safety, Sustainable Development — Owamah
Engineering innovation has been identified as critical to addressing Nigeria’s security, safety and sustainable development challenges.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Engr. Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, FNSE, FNICE, FNIEE, stated this while delivering a public lecture titled, “Engineering Innovation for Enhanced Security, Safety and Sustainable National Development,” on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Engr. D. A. Umukoro Hall, Ministry of Works, Asaba.
The programme was organised by the Young Engineers Forum of Nigeria (YEFoN), Asaba Chapter, under the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Asaba Branch.
Owamah highlighted the role of smart surveillance, resilient infrastructure, renewable energy, digital technologies, effective waste management and indigenous innovation in tackling some of the nation’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, flooding, energy shortages and environmental degradation.
He charged young engineers to see Nigeria’s challenges as opportunities for innovation, urging them to uphold competence and integrity, embrace entrepreneurship and develop practical solutions capable of protecting lives and improving society.
The university don also called on government to increase funding for research, support indigenous technologies, enforce engineering standards, maintain public infrastructure and strengthen collaboration among government, academia and industry.

Owamah expressed appreciation to the Coordinator of YEFoN, Asaba Chapter, Engr. Raymond Onyeka Nwajuonye, and other members of the executive for organising the programme and providing a warm reception.
He stressed that through collective commitment to innovation and professional excellence, engineers could contribute significantly to building a safer, more secure and sustainable Nigeria.
Owamah is also the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Asaba Branch.
