Eku Traditional Council Endorses Akpowowo As Sole Candidate For Ethiope East Constituency

The Eku Community Traditional Council, also known as Ogwa-in-Council, has adopted the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Olorogun) Arthur Akpowowo, as its sole candidate for the Ethiope East Constituency seat in the 2027 elections.

The resolution was reached on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a meeting of the council at the administrative headquarters of Eku community.

According to sources at the meeting, Okakuro Peter Obere moved a motion calling on the Eku Traditional Council to unanimously adopt Akpowowo as the community’s sole candidate, citing the development strides the Deputy Speaker had brought to Eku throughout his political career.

The motion was seconded by Okakuro Chief Frederick Adu.

The sources said the motion was opposed by only one member, Okakuro Okiemute Agagaraga, while all other Okakuros in attendance supported it.

They added that when the Ugbene’Ku Otota, spokesman of Eku community, Okakuro Godwin Aganbi, put the motion to a vote, the Eku Community Traditional Council adopted Akpowowo as its sole candidate for the 2027 Ethiope East Constituency election.

The council also called on other aspirants seeking the Ethiope East Constituency seat to step down in support of the resolution.

In the Urhobo traditional system of administration, there are two levels of traditional governance: the kingdom and the community. Kings head the kingdoms, while Okarorho head the communities.

The sources explained that the Ogwa-in-Council serves as the apex ruling body and administrative authority of each community.

The council, in its final position, reportedly said that “in a sane community nobody is expected to throw away their very best,” stressing the importance of addressing the matter early.

The secretary to the Ogwa-in-Council has been mandated to write to all candidates and invite them to appear before the council on October 3, 2026, to formally communicate the resolution.
