The President of the Student Union Government, SUG, Delta State University, Abraka, Comrade Mamus Igbuku, has said that plans were underway for the union to carry out an awareness campaign to tame the tide of students committing suicide over poor performance in their examination.
Speaking to Oasis Magazine (OM) during an exclusive chat in Abraka, Comr. Igbuku expressed optimism that this campaign against suicide would yield results.
He considered the deaths recorded as a case of depression and not just one of failure in examinations.
“Those that have committed suicide are not the only students that have had bad results,” he stressed.
He added: “I know that there are new exam policies such as a student withdrawing from the university with a Grade Point below 1 and students no more allowed to graduate with a pass grade, but students should not deal with such issues when caught in the web by taking their lives.
“Students who find themselves in overwhelming situations should learn to contact the Counseling Unit for help.
Speaking further, Igbuku urged students in the institution to desist from waiting till examination period before reading their books, saying that this could bring about poor performance in their examination.
According to him, yesterday, during a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Victor Peretomode, he (Peretomode) opined that the management had approved that henceforth, the Counselling Unit of the institution would move from one faculty to another, where students would be properly counselled and answers provided to issues that they may be faced with.
In less than a month, 4 students are reported to have committed suicide in the institution. One of them we learnt ingested insecticide; another drank kerosene; while the other took poisonous drugs. One of them is said to have survived because she was quickly rushed to the hospital.
