The youthwing of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Worldwide, led by Comrade Efemena Umukoro, has commenced the distribution of palliatives to indigenes across Delta Central Senatorial district in the state to cushion the effect of the lockdown directed by the Delta State Government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
The exercise started yesterday, April 9, 2020, at DSC in Udu Local Government Area.
Comrade Umukoro who was accompanied by other Urhobo youths also visited Urhobo indigenes in Ovwian community in the said council area where they also distributed food items such as garri and yam to several persons.
Cash gifts of undisclosed amounts were also presented to some of the women.
Speaking to journalists while receiving the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Rose Edewor who was overjoyed, commended the Urhobo youth leader for the laudable move, as she sang and danced with other women, also praying for him to have a smooth sail as president and bring more fortune to Urhobo Nation.
She added: ‘He has wiped tears away from our eyes and taking pains from our hearts.”
Also, the Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Hon. (Chief) Benjamin Sharta, who was present to witness the presentation, thanked Umukoro for taking up this assignment to spread love in this crisis season.
He said: “What I saw here today came to me as a surprise because I was not expecting this to happen. There has been a lockdown and many do not have food to it, but this now will make them feel at home and also make them proud that Urhobo cares.”
According to him, looking at the activities of the President so far, he still wonders why Urhobo nation took so long to discover such potential, adding that he has proven to the world that Urhobo youths are kind, vibrant and capable.
“The same way our leader at the national level is making us proud that is the same way Umukoro is making us proud at the local scene,” he opined.
He urged the youth leader to keep up the good works, remain steadfast and not allow any form of discouragement or detractors hinder his commitment and plans for Urhbo Nation.
The representative of Hon. (Chief) Jite Brown, Chairman, Udu Local Government Area, Mr. Johnbull Aghogho also thanked Comrade Umukoro for the presentation.
Speaking further, he said Umukoro is a round peg in a round hole, saying that the local government chairman appreciates the gifts, noting that this is the first of its kind in the area.
On his part, Comrade Umukoro, said the task of spreading love during this period of the pandemic is very dear to him, as he called on other Urhobo elites to support the project.
His words: “At the beginning of the lockdown we shared hand sanitizers to our people. In the course of doing that, I was made to see that our people are hungry and decided to do this today.”
He called on other persons expecting the presentation to be patient and expectant.
Meanwhile, the head of the medical team during the visit, Comrade Oturu Sovereignty, aka Dr. Sove, Director of Programmes & Niger Delta Affairs, NANS Zone B (South South & South East) said the visit was geared towards reminding the people that Urhobo youths care and have them at heart.
“Many people live from hand to mouth and so I am in support that we must present palliatives to them,” he stressed.
