Delta Lawmakers Pass Community Security Corps Agency Bill Into Law

The Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill, was on Wednesday 22nd July, 2020 Plenary at Asaba the State Capital, read the third time and passed into law by the State House of Assembly.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori who presided over the plenary said that the passage of the Bill, is the right step in the right direction as the State will now join other States that have passed similar laws in addressing the high level of insecurity in the country.

“At the committee of the whole, the Bill was considered clause by clause, section by section with germane contributions and amendments were proposed by members and were considered by all,” he said.

The Speaker added: “Distinguished colleagues I congratulate all of us for the professonalism shown in the passage of this Bill. It will no doubt improve the security architecture of the state, that will further protect the life and properties of all Deltans”.

He thanked Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for his response in addressing the various security challenges in the state.

Earlier, during plenary, the lawmakers received the report of the House Committee on peace and Security on a Bill for a law to provide security for public safety, detection and prevention of crime in public places, and for other matters connected there with.

Presenting the report on the floor of the House was the chairman of the committee, Hon. Asupa Peter Forteta, Member representing Burutu I Constituency.

According to the chairman, in line with the mandate given to the committee, the committee met severally and scruntinized the bill clause by clause, and owing to the Covid-19 protocols, the committee had to make online conference meeting with stakeholders with a view to soliciting their Input and recommendations which were of great assistance to the committee, adding that the committee therefore has produced the bill with proposed amendments attached to the report as an annexure.

On receiving the report, the Majority Leader, Hon. Barr. Tim Kome Owhefere, moved that the report be received by for further consideration and was seconded by Hon. Anthony E. Elekeokwuri, member representing Ika North East.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori slatted committee of the whole House for final deliberation on the bill for Tuesday 28th of July, 2020.
