He said the human rights group is a body of people with burning desire to champion the rights of those who are abused in the society.
He said though human rights abuse are usually attributed to the police, the present police Commissioner in Delta state, Hafix Inuwa, does not tolerate such acts.
Ogedegbe said the Delta police boss is human rights friendly and would always ensure that the rights of people are protected.
He said prior to the posting of Inuwa to Delta, there were many cases of rights abuses in courts but with the posting of Inuwa to Delta, many of those cases are settled outside the courts, hence he said ‘we have a police force that is cooperating with us.”
He said by law, the moment a child is born he has right to life, adding that if anyone is caught committing a crime, no one has right to execute him but must follow through the process of law and not carrying out extra-judicial killings
He said if such a person is caught, he will be tried and if found guilty, he will be sent to jail for murder.
“Human rights is inborn. From the day you are born, you have fundamental human rights to life. If anyone is found to have committed abortion or attempted abortion, she can be arrested for murder,” Ogedegbr said.
Delta commissioner of police, Hafiz Inuwa, who was represented at the inauguration ceremony by CSP Imade Graham, in charge of Dragon, said human right is germane and no one has right to take another person’s life against the law.
He itemised the basic rights of individuals and said everyone has right to choose the way they want to live their lives but must be within the confines of the law. The CP said Nigeria police of today are ever ready to protect lives and property of Nigerians.
He told members of the group to tell Nigerians to obey laws saying if there are infractions into the law, the individual’s rights will be restricted by law enforcement officers.
Pastor Edewor Ogedegbe, legal adviser to the group, warned against turning human rights advocacy to money making opportunities.
Adding: “We have seen many who extort money from people in the name of fighting for their rights. We do it for humanity and for the downtrodden and for God.”
He said the fight of human rights groups is for both the police and the people. He said the body has fought for both police and the general public.
