Exclusive: How 6-Year-Old Girl Kidnapped In Abraka Was Released, Dumped In Benin

Kidnappers of a 6-year-old girl in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Courage, have finally released her after spending six days in their custody.

Sources said Courage was taking to Adesuwa Police station in Benin by a lady who saw her roaming the street.

Courage is said to have told the police how she was kidnapped from Abraka and dumped.

This made the police call the Police Division in Abraka to inform them about the case and find out if they were aware of the kidnap. The police in Abraka after confirming the kidnap contacted the parents of Courage, Mr & Mrs Nnabuife Nworie.

According to sources, the parents were in Benin City on Friday but were unable to bring back Courage to Abraka, as they were told that since the case involved two states, due process must be followed before she is handed back to them.

They were asked to return back on Tuesday, saying that by then the police would have completed the whole process.

Speaking to the father of Courage, Mr. Nworie, in a telephone conversation, he disclosed that the kidnappers contacted him a day after his daughter was kidnapped, adding that the man that spoke to him several times claimed that they were at Eket in Calabar.

He added: “Abraka is no more safe. It appears the town is not safe for children anymore. We cannot lock them indoors. I am surprised that this was able to happen in the open and cannot still understand how she went away with my child in her car and no one saw it happen. How was that possible?”

He continued: “The local vigilante need to step up their activities too. When I approached them, they felt unconcerned and so I had to carry my cross. Though I reported to the police initially, I was careful not to involve them so that my daughter is not hurt by the kidnappers because they were monitoring us and had spies everywhere. Now, the issue is under investigation. “

On why he was unable to bring back his daughter from police custody yesterday, he said that the DPO of Adesuwa Police Station explained that it was an interstate issue and that due process must be followed.

“I was asked to come back on Tuesday to pick her because they said by then they would have finished the process. Remember today and Monday is public holiday,” he said.

Speaking further, the child’s father said that over N800, 000 borrowed from family and friends was spent to secure the release of Courage.

“Courage told us that the woman that kidnapped her usually comes to my wife’s shop to buy things. She also said that she will be able to recognise her if she sees her,” he added.

Oasis Magazine (OM) gathered that the kidnap of the child may have initially been for ritual purposes because Courage revealed that she was taken to a river where she was told by the lady that kidnapped her that she would be bound and thrown into.

According to the little girl, after the lady had taken her round the river several times, she suddenly rushed away with the girl from the area, a move many think looks like a case of rejection of the girl by the “gods”.

At the time of filing this report, attempts to speak with the police in Delta State proved abortive.
