Egwunyenga Commissions Ultramodern Event Centre, Office Complex, Others Built By DELSU Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society

Vice Chancellor, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has commissioned the ultramodern Event Centre, Office complex and a warehouse built by the institution’s Workers ‘ Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited, Abraka.

The event which took place on Wednesday, had in attendance Principal Officers of the University led by the Vice Chancellor.

The Director of Cooperatives, Delta State, Mr. Chukwudi Onyekpe and Director of Cooperatives, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Mr. Christian Ogoh, were also on ground to witness the auspicious occasion.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Prof Egwunyenga said history has been made with the completion of the project.

He added that the Cooperative has become an asset of inestimable value to the University.

He advised members to put in place loan repayment plans before requesting for loan, adding that the Management Committee must ensure that loans are given to only those who meet the conditions for granting of loans and not based on sentiments.

He backed the building of a guest house on the remaining part of the Cooperative land as planned by the executive.

Professor Egwunyenga said that his administration has confidence in the Cooperative, saying he is glad the edifice was completed in his time.

Earlier, President of the Cooperative, Mr. Edward Agbure,  thanked the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof. V.F. Peretomode who he said started it all by allocating the portion of land to the Cooperative Society, saying that “part of which has been used for this project” and that “the remaining portion will be used for the construction of the Cooperative Guest House which has also been approved by the general house.”

He continued: “A lot of persons are already patronizing our events centre at a minimal rate of N150, 000 per event.

“At the appropriate, the society shall request from University Management for additional space and it is our expectation that the University will oblige us because the Cooperative Society and the University are partners in progress.

“Our focal point was wealth creation while promising to do things differently for the benefit of our great Society. We found out that there was no secret other than “diversification” that is, for a Cooperative Society to grow, members of the Management Committee must venture into different viable businesses. It was on this basis that the management Committee decided to build a standard warehouse and Event Centre.”

Speaking further, he said: “Today marks a turning point in the annals of our great society. This present Management Committee has created additional stream of income for the Society and more in the offing.

On his part, Onyekpe said DELSU Cooperative has made him proud with the project, just as he commended the institution’s management for giving an enabling environment for the project to be completed.

Speaking further, he said the project will advance the Cooperative and urged leaders to come up with more ideas to create other avenues for inflow of income.

He commended the Agbura-led executive for continuing with giving out loans to members in need and still carrying on with the gigantic project.
