Only Royal Fathers Are Empowered To Confer Chieftaincy Title –Gov.Okowa
The State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, has reiterated that traditional rulers in the state were the only prescribed authority, empowered by law to confer chieftaincy titles on deserving persons in their domain with a charge on them to exercise the power with great restraint.
The State Deputy Governor, Deacon Barr. Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, who represented the governor of the state, stated this during the occasion of the presentation of staff of office to the traditional ruler of Tarakiri Kingdom.

“As the traditional head of Tarakiri Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Owoupele Danladi Foubiri, PHD, Angulu 1, The Ebenana wei of Tarakiri Kingdom, Patani Local Government Council, is the prescribed authority empowered by law to confer chieftaincy titles on deserving persons. I wish to use this medium to advise him, including other traditional rulers in the state, to exercise this power as prescribed authority with great restraint,” he said.
Okowa stated that he had no doubt that given the background of His Royal Majesty, Dr. Owoupele Danladi of wealth of experience and the positive support by prominent sons and daughters of the kingdom would further aid him in the exercise of his functions in the kingdom.
“Your Royal Majesty, given the background of your wealth of experience and surrounded by prominent sons and daughters of this kingdom , I am confident that you will not have problem in the exercise of your functions as the leader of this industrious and peace -loving community,” he said.
He enjoined the traditional ruler not give reasons for his subjects to doubt his ability to uphold the sanctity of their customs and traditions of his people, adding that he should imbibe the democratic virtues of dialogue and consultation to achieve peace and harmony in the kingdom all through his reign.
Thanking the entire people of Tarakiri for supporting the state government, Okowa affirmed that such positive attitude and support would further propel the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP) to actualise the promised dividends of democracy for Deltans.
“I sincerely express Government’s deep appreciation to the Tarakiri people for the kind sentiment you showered on this administration. Definitely, such positive attitudes and support will further propel us to actualize the avowed commitments of the people’s democratic party- PDP-led administration in the state towards the promotion of the genuine aspirations of Deltans not only in the area of rapid infrastructural development but also empowerment of our people, especially the youths,” he said.
While calling on sons and daughters of Tarakiri kingdom to take advantage of the various empowerment programmes in the state for self improvement, the Governor stated that he would continue to embark on meaningful projects and programmes that would impact positively on the people of the area.
Delivering a keynote address, the Chairman of Patani Local Government Council, Hon. Isaac Aguanah, thanked the state governor for making the dream of the kingdom come true.
He drew the attention of the government to the deplorable condition of some roads in the kingdom, calling for urgent action now that the rains had subsided.
Earlier, the state governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa also presented staff of office to His Royal Highness, Bar. Augustine Ene Oghenejabor, Odiologbo of Ibrede, with a call on the people of Ibrede kingdom to remain supportive to the state government.
