BREAKING: NANS Set To Occupy Govt House Over Hike In DELSU, DSUST School Fees, As Ultimatum Ends

Students in tertiary institutions in Delta State are set to occupy the state’s Government House in Asaba after the 48-hour ultimatum given to the managements of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka and Delta State University of Science and Technology (DSUST), Ozoro, by the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS Zone B) Southeast and Southsouth to reverse the hike in school fees has elapsed.

NANS had described the hike In fees by the two state owned tertiary institutions in Delta as reckless and insensitive, while calling on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to intervene.

On Wednesday, the Deputy Coordinator of the association, Comrade Dio, Oghale Emeka Rex, in a statement, said: “Following the expiration of our ultimatum to the management of DELSU and DELSUSTH and we are yet to hear from them, before we take to the streets fully as adequate preparation is on ground to that effect please let’s start our demand first by occupying the phone numbers of those who sat and made the drastic decision without consideration of the students.”

Adding: “We shall be occupying them one after the other and we are starting this morning. Nigerian Students the fight is not mine alone rather it’s our collective fight. This men enjoyed free education and sound scholarship in conducive environments but want the son of farmer, petty trader and common man to be a drop out. Our head of institution said we should go and look for money then come back to school if we have made money. We can’t continue in the era of tyranny in our education sector.”

The statement continued: “Occupy the number below this morning with the #tag make education affordable for us, don’t turn our institutions to business centers.

He said further: “We have given them enough time to reduce the school fees schedule and reverse back to status quo that of DELSU, but up till this moment we are yet to hear any positive news from them.

“While we make preparations to occupy the streets, we should first start the protest with his phone by occupying his phone number today.

“Currently we’re on our way to Sokoto for the National Congress of NANS and upon our return to Delta state, we shall take over the streets of Delta if they’re yet to attend to this issue. They have enough time to do the needful before our return.”

According to him, “they will ground government activities in the state, saying no ministries, departments and agencies will be allowed to function until something is done about the hike in fees.”
