Lawyer Petitions Police After Friends Who Deposited Corpse Of BIU Final Year Student In UBTH Morgue Go Missing

A rights activist and lawyer in Delta State, Barr. Omemiroro Maxwell Ogedegbe, has called for justice for a Final Year Law student of the Benson Idahosa University, BIU, Temabo Precious London Ukuwrere, whose corpse was deposited in the morgue of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Benin City, Edo State, following yet-to-be unraveled circumstances.

The lawyer who took to Facebook on Wednesday to draw attention to the issue, said “the parents received the news from her friend who claimed she had an accident while they were attending a wedding at Auchi, Edo State and was rushed to the UBTH as three doctors were battling to save her life as narrated by her friends requesting the parents to send money across to augment treatment.”

His post added: “The family rushed to the UBTH and were told the daughter was never brought to the E&A of the UBTH as only three students who claimed to have been involved in an accident were brought to the E&A and they discharged themselves in few hours against medical advice and merely indicated BiU students in their medical forms and the name of one of them was the student that called the parent.”

According to the lawyer, the parents of the BIU student proceeded to the UBTH morgue only to find the lifeless body of their daughter claimed to have been deposited by one Desmond whose phone number was allocated to a different lady who claimed not to know any Desmond and not to have been to Benin city, Edo State.

He added: “The school management has not deemed it fit to make a statement whereas it is the policy of the school to always call on the parents each time a student is seeking permission to leave the hostel.

“Again, the school management has a policy of daily conducting a bed check to know if a student is absent.

“The late Temabo Precious London Ukuwrere was requested to remain in the school for a programme. The school is yet to answer how she left the hostel and with whom and how the parents were not notified despite paying 1.5million naira tuition.”

Ogedegbe disclosed that “a demand has been made for the police to commence thorough investigation.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was unaware of the issue but asked that will call back in one hour. A call to his mobile phone number thereafter was not picked nor returned at the time of publishing his report.
