DELSU: New Dean Vows To Tackle Indescent Dressing, Others In Faculty Of Social Sciences

The new Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Professor Sam Ogege, has vowed to tackle indescent dressing and other negative trends in the faculty.
Professor Ogege said this while speaking with selected students of the Department of Mass Communication in the institution during.an interview.
He also responded to questions relating to what he hopes to accomplish during his tenure and hinted on other issues.

Let’s meet you sir.

I am Professor Sam Ogege.

You were recently elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. What is the feeling like?

Very awesome, I was elated at the same time. I am humbled that the people found me worthy to be the Dean.

How has it been like being the Dean of the Faculty?

Very okay, though tasking but it’s okay.

Before now, what other role have you played in the faculty ?

I have been the HOD of my Department

What Department Sir?

Sociology..I was the HOD before I was elected as the Dean of the Faculty.

How long have you been lecturing in DELSU?

I came in as a lecturer in the year 2000; that is over 22 years now with a first Degree.

What are your reasons for contesting for the position of the Dean of the Faculty?

First of all, I am qualified for being a professor. Also, I have been a HOD. I like intervening in human problems. The only way for me to address such problems in the faculty is by becoming the Dean.

What are some of the challenges you spotted that you wish to tackle in the Faculty?

I just came in; if you look around this office you notice that there are so many things that needs to be fixed before I will fully settle in. Meanwhile, when I came, I realized that the Boards in Mass Communication and Psychology hall were bad. I have been able to replace the one at Psychology hall and I am working towards replacing the one in Mass Communication Hall. I promise to do my best to ensure everything is in order. Any issue that is beyond my power will be taken to the Central, the VC.

Besides building on the legacy of your predecessors, what’s your agenda for the Faculty?

Firstly, I will make the environment cleaner and more conducive for learning. In terms of students and staff discipline, I have met with all level coordinators and their assistants, various level advisers. i told them that whenever there is a class and a lecturer keeps students waiting for over 30 minutes without calling, they should report to me. Also, I will address the issue of indecent dressing, hairstyles, boys wearing earrings. I do not accept such in my class. There was a coordinator I drove from my office because he was wearing earrings. I am trying to look for a way to organize a symposium or an awareness forum, to discuss the relevance for a boy wearing earrings, if it is part of the trend, I will do all that.

How about the female counterparts?

Yes, the girls are not left out, i will not allow girls to wear skimpy dresses, rippled dresses or wearing of clothes that expose their body. Generally, l will address issue of indecent dressing among students in the faculty so as to reduce it to the barest minimum.

One of the major Challenges in this faculty is the absence of cafeteria. What step is your administration taking to address this matter?

There was a cafeteria in the faculty, it was when Management Sciences came in from Anwai campus that the school allotted the place that the cafeteria was situated to them. Hopefully mid this year, they will relocate to the Faculty of Management Science building that is currently under construction and I will make sure that a central cafeteria will be made available for staff and students.

This means there are plans put in place to this effect ?

Yes, as soon as the departments move out. I cannot say we are going to build one. We will make use of our existing facility.

In the past years, the Faculty of Social Sciences has been notable for organizing conferences, symposiums and other academic events, but this practice seems to be fading away, why is it so and how do you intend to remedy it ?

Well, I feel it is as a result of the existing cost of things and financial constraints that have discouraged the faculty from organizing such events. I promise I will look into how we can organize a conference where we can discuss topical issues ravaging the faculty and the school at large for inter departmental debates.

Does your administration have any form of incentives to motivate students?

The center, that is the school management has mandated us to send names of the best graduating students and best students in other levels. For the faculty, I think it can be replicated.

What about the staff ?

There was a time we organized an award for the staff but all these requires money. The current economic reality may not give room for all that. The idea is there but we need money to execute all that. Even the center is equally saddled with so many responsibilities and also suffering from these financial constraints.

What are your final words to the faculty and the University Community generally?

The students should be well behaved and disciplined. They should know why they are here. Lecturers also, should treat the students like human beings because we are here because of the students. Without the students, we would not be engaged as lecturers in the first place.
