2 Trapped As 5-storey Building Collapses In Onitsha

An uncompleted five-storey building located at Basden street, Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra State, reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, with two persons said to have been trapped.
Currently, excavators are working at the scene to get the trapped people who were working on the building out – dead or alive.
The chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Emeka Orji, is on hand, directing on how to rescue the trapped people.
According to an impeccable inside source, who pleaded anonymity, “The building started from the fifth floor to collapse. The building is at the finishing touches and the fifth floor was almost finished when it collapsed and other floors followed suit.
“They are up to two workers in the building that are trapped with scores injured.”
As at the time of filing this report, efforts were being made both by the security personnel and sympathizers to rescue the trapped people.
Meanwhile, the police command in Anambra confirmed the collapse of the said building under construction.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to journalists on Sunday, but he said the details of the collapsed building were still sketchy.
He said, “Our operatives are there, though the details are still sketchy. As soon as I get the full details, I will get back to you..”

A witness, who pleaded anonymity, said the building was meant to serve as commercial purposes on completion.
The source said the building collapsed in the early hours of Sunday while some construction workers were on the last floor.
Chinyere Nwoyethe, the public relations officer of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, said they had yet to be informed about the collapsed building.
The incident happened barely two weeks after a building collapsed, killing five persons in Ochanja Market, Onitsha.
