Delta Activist, Ukuanovwe, Advocates For Police Welfare, Reforms

Rights Activist and Ethiope federal 2023 ADC house of Representatives Candidate, Prince Ukuanovwe Godstime OJ, is advocating for the reform of the Nigeria Police force and the welfare of the personnel of the force to be improved.

Prince Ukuanovwe who is the current state Director of the Conference for the Actualization of Human Rights (CAHR), added that the poor welfare and meager salary of personnel of the Nigerian Police Force is a major contributing factor to the series of extortions and abuse of power common with men of the security outfit.

He maintained that there is urgent and immediate need for the reform of the Nigerian Police force with emphasis on their training and welfare to tame the rising surge of extortion and abuse of power within the force to enable the Nigeria Police Force operate with global standards.

He added: “So I call on the National Security Adviser to Mr President, the Honorable Minster for Police Affairs to appeal to Mr President to look into the police force for urgent reforms with emphasis on their welfare which includes their salary and allowances, adding that attention should also be paid to the recruitment process of those intending to join the police.

“Its a statement of fact that a hungry man is an angry man. You can’t give a hungry man ammunition with power to bear the same and not pay him well and then expect him not to abuse the powers given to him.

“Also there’s an urgent need for frequent training for stale officers to enable them to respect and uphold fundamental human rights.”

Furthermore, he said: “Moreso I wish to call on the IG to subject fresh recruit officers to drug test. And run periodic drug tests on serving officers. These approaches shall sanitize the system and give Nigerians a proper policing system that they deserve.

“While I call on the government and the IG to do the needful it is imperative to state that it is time we respect our Police officers and return the honour they truly deserve putting their resolve to serve mother land into consideration. It is only proper we give them their kudos because in the real sense, policing and security should be everyone’s business
Let’s learn to accept that truly the police are our friend,” he concluded.
