Delta Police Launch Violent Complaint Response Unit, Reorganises Tactical Operations

The Delta State Police Command has established a specialised Violent Complaint Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a wider operational restructuring aimed at improving efficiency, discipline, and accountability in policing across the state.

According to the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the initiative was carried out in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police to strengthen operational effectiveness and ensure faster response to violent and high-risk incidents.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said the newly created VCRU will handle urgent and sensitive cases such as threats to life, grievous assault, domestic violence, and other violent crimes requiring immediate police intervention. The unit is expected to function as a rapid response and coordination team, working alongside divisional police formations and tactical units.

As part of its take-off, selected officers deployed to the unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme focused on operational readiness and professional conduct. CP Oyeniyi, who addressed the personnel during the training, charged them to uphold discipline, professionalism, and strict respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.

The training also featured lectures from the Legal Department, which covered legal frameworks guiding police operations, use of force, and compliance with existing laws. Officers were additionally retrained on arms handling, musketry, and the lawful use of firearms, with emphasis on restraint, responsibility, and operational safety.

The Commissioner of Police stressed that the reforms are intended to deepen professional policing, enhance rapid response to violent incidents, and restore public confidence in law enforcement. He, however, warned that acts of negligence, misconduct, or human rights abuse would not be tolerated under any circumstance.

He further directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units to fully support the new unit and ensure prompt referral and handling of violent complaints in line with established procedures.

The Command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property and urged residents to promptly report violent incidents through official police communication channels.
