APC Primaries: Nwoko Awaits NWC Verdict, Insists Senate Return Is Non-Negotiable

Senator Ned Nwoko, a frontline contender for the senatorial ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) weekend said that he is waiting for the announcement of the results of the Delta North APC senatorial primaries by the National Working Committee of the party.

Senator Nwoko, who is optimistic of victory arising from evidences drawn from the primaries, insisted that his return to the Senate in 2027 is not negotiable.

There have been controversies surrounding results of the primaries, a development which has led to protracted wait by Delta North APC members for the announcement of the authentic winner by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

In a succinct and clear statement, Senator Nwoko told this reporter that the National Working Committee of the party is doing its work, hence he’s patiently waiting for the outcome of the NWC investigations.

Senator Ned Nwoko is currently enjoying a significant advantage over former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who is reportedly claiming victory despite party authorities have not announced results.

Multiple APC sources say ongoing conversations within influential circles have increasingly shifted from who joined the party recently to who offers the strongest political value ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to party sources, Nwoko’s greatest advantage lies in the fact that he is already the sitting senator representing Delta North. In the calculations of many APC strategists, displacing an incumbent senator who remains politically visible and electorally marketable could create unnecessary complications for a party seeking stability ahead of a crucial election.

“Senator Nwoko has the structure, the visibility and the legislative platform. From a strategic point of view, many people are asking why the party would want to weaken an existing advantage in Senator Ned Nwoko,” a source familiar with internal discussions told journalists on Friday night.

Beyond incumbency factor, Nwoko is said to enjoy growing goodwill in sections of the presidency and among influential APC stakeholders because of his consistent promotion of the proposed Anioma State project.

Party insiders argue that the campaign has given him a unique political identity that transcends conventional partisan politics and resonates strongly with many constituents across Delta North.

Another factor working in Nwoko’s favour, according to insiders, is the perception that he remained committed to the APC long before the recent influx of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It is believed that rewarding long-standing party members would help reassure APC loyalists that years of commitment to the party still pay. This school of thought argue that recent defectors from the PDP cannot be trusted.

Within these circles, there appears to be concern that sidelining established APC figures immediately after the arrival of former PDP leaders could generate resentment among grassroots members who helped sustain the party during more challenging periods.

While Okowa remains a recognised political figure with experience in government, insiders say some APC stakeholders view his recent entry into the party as insufficient on its own to outweigh the advantages currently enjoyed by an incumbent senator already operating within the APC framework.

“There is a difference between joining a party and building political capital within that party. Many people at the national level understand that distinction,” another insider revealed.

Party sources also point to Nwoko’s national visibility. Over the last three years, the senator has maintained a high public profile through legislative interventions, advocacy campaigns and constituency engagement initiatives that have kept him consistently in the national conversation.

For some influential voices within the party, the argument is straightforward: replacing a serving senator with a newcomer to the APC structure could expose the party to avoidable internal battles when its primary objective should be consolidating political gains in Delta State.

Insiders further suggest that if the APC national leadership and the presidency are eventually called to weigh broader political interests, factors such as incumbency, loyalty to the party, national visibility, legislative relevance and grassroots acceptability could tilt the balance in favour of Nwoko.

Whether those considerations ultimately influence the party’s final position remains uncertain. Among many APC stakeholders monitoring developments in Delta North, there is a growing perception that Senator Nwoko will enter the next phase of the political contest with significant advantages that may be difficult for any challenger to overcome.
