NUJ South-South Raises Alarm Over Fake Military Escorts, Calls for Stronger Security, Road Infrastructure

CALABAR — The South-South Zonal Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country, warning that insecurity is gradually spreading into communities previously regarded as safe.

The union also raised the alarm over the increasing proliferation of military uniforms and gear in the hands of non-state actors, urging security agencies and members of the public to be vigilant, particularly regarding vehicles being escorted by individuals dressed in military attire.

The concerns formed part of resolutions contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the South-South Zonal Executive Council meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday, June 13, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Zone F Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo.

Security, Infrastructure Top Deliberations

While acknowledging efforts by governments across the South-South to protect lives and property, the council called for intensified community policing, proper profiling of persons entering communities, and stronger collaboration between residents and security agencies to tackle emerging threats.

The union noted with concern the gradual spread of insecurity into areas once considered peaceful and urged state governments in the region to strengthen their security architecture and respond decisively to emerging challenges.

On infrastructure, the council commended the Federal Government for the completion of the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Highway, describing it as a major boost to regional connectivity and economic development.

It also praised progress on the Calabar–Itu Highway project but urged the authorities to expedite its completion, alongside other critical road projects in the region, to ease the hardship faced by commuters and reduce road-related fatalities.

The meeting further called on the Federal Government to accelerate environmental remediation efforts in oil-producing communities and undertake comprehensive environmental impact assessments to address the long-term consequences of oil exploration and production activities.

Don’t Sacrifice Governance for Politics, NUJ Tells Leaders

With political activities expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the union cautioned governments across the region against allowing political ambitions to overshadow governance.

The council urged elected officials to remain focused on delivering democratic dividends while conducting political activities responsibly.

It also appealed to journalists in the South-South to uphold the ethics of the profession and ensure responsible reportage during the electioneering period.

Union Affairs

On internal matters, the zonal leadership expressed appreciation to the Cross River State Council of the NUJ for hosting the meeting and reviving zonal engagements after a prolonged period of inactivity.

The council resolved that the Zone’s proposed Patron, Elder Bolaji Anani, should formally communicate his acceptance of the nomination. It also called for a review of the status of Grand Patrons and Patrons, with a view to withdrawing such honours from individuals who have failed to meet the expectations associated with the positions.

The meeting congratulated Comrade Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, on his appointment as Acting Managing Director of the Edo Broadcasting Corporation and commended Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo for the appointment.

It also appreciated the National Executive Council (NEC) for lifting the sanction previously imposed on the Secretary of the Delta State Council, Comrade Victor Sorokwu.

The council further urged state councils to establish dedicated funding mechanisms to support zonal executives in carrying out national assignments and engagements on behalf of the zone.

Disciplinary Matter

The meeting also considered the report of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee of the Cross River State Council regarding allegations of misconduct against Mr. Ubon Ekanem and Mr. Edem Archibong.

The zonal leadership reaffirmed that only the National Executive Council possesses the constitutional authority to suspend members. However, pending NEC’s final determination, both individuals will remain barred from entering the Etim Bassey Press Centre and participating in all NUJ activities, while all rights and privileges associated with membership remain withdrawn.

The council also commended Comrade Opaka Dokubo and Zonal Secretary, Comrade John Angese, for their commitment and cooperation in ensuring the successful convening of the meeting, while applauding the Cross River State Council for its hospitality and efforts toward a successful hosting of the event.
