UNIPORT Appoints Former Rivers Health Commissioner as 10th Vice-Chancellor
The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt has approved the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike as the institution’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Chike, a former Commissioner for Health in Rivers State during the administration of Nyesom Wike, will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, whose tenure ends on July 13, 2026.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sam Kpenu, following the conclusion of a selection process conducted by the institution’s 17th Governing Council.
According to the statement, the appointment followed a rigorous process carried out in line with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act. The exercise involved a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which oversaw the selection in accordance with established regulations governing the appointment of vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated Professor Chike on his emergence and expressed confidence in his capacity to provide effective leadership that would advance the university’s academic and institutional development.
Professor Chike is expected to formally assume office on July 13, 2026.
Before handing over, Professor Georgewill will preside over the university’s convocation ceremonies scheduled for June 5 and 6, marking the final major event of his tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
