FG Begins Training For 5,000 Smart Meter Installers Nationwide

The Federal Government has officially launched the pioneer training phase for 5,000 smart meter installers under the newly unveiled Power Force initiative.

Implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the scheme aims to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap while creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

The training commenced at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) headquarters in Abuja and will subsequently be extended to training centres across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The exercise comes after more than 217,000 applicants competed for the initial 5,000 available slots, underscoring the high demand for technical and vocational employment opportunities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had launched the Power Force initiative on July 2, 2026, under the Presidential Metering Initiative. The application portal was opened from July 4 to July 18, 2026, attracting over 217,000 applications before the formal inauguration and commencement of training on July 23, 2026.

Participants are undergoing a three-week intensive technical and practical training programme coordinated by NAPTIN. The training covers smart meter installation, testing, safety procedures and customer service, while successful participants will receive professional certification from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

Upon completion, the certified installers will be linked to employment and business opportunities with electricity distribution companies (DisCos), meter manufacturers and other service providers across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The initiative forms a key component of the Federal Government’s power sector reform agenda aimed at deploying more than seven million smart meters nationwide. Officials say the programme will help eliminate estimated billing, improve transparency in electricity billing, boost revenue collection for electricity providers and enhance service delivery to consumers.

Beyond addressing the country’s metering deficit, the government said the initiative is expected to build a pool of certified local professionals capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term electricity sector transformation while creating sustainable jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians.
