CDHR Blames FG Over Collapse Of Delta Roads, Demands Urgent Intervention

The Delta State Branch of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has expressed concern over the worsening condition of federal roads across Delta State, calling on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to alleviate the hardship faced by motorists and residents.

In a statement issued on Saturday and jointly signed by the Chairman of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State Branch, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, and the Publicity Secretary, Comrade Nosa Oveseey Godswill, the group acknowledged that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori could intervene to provide temporary relief but maintained that the responsibility for the maintenance and reconstruction of federal roads rests squarely with the Federal Government.

The CDHR questioned what it described as the inadequate efforts of federal lawmakers representing the affected areas, particularly members of the House of Representatives and Senator Ned Nwoko, to press the Federal Government to rehabilitate the failing road infrastructure.

According to the group, greater attention appears to be focused on the campaign for the creation of Anioma State, while existing infrastructure critical to the daily lives of the people continues to deteriorate.

The organisation also referenced recent comments by Adams Oshiomhole on the need to prioritise the rehabilitation of dilapidated roads before embarking on new projects, saying the situation in Delta reflects the concerns he raised.

CDHR further criticised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, alleging that no major federal road projects have been approved for Delta and Edo states, describing the development as neglect that should not be allowed to continue.

The group urged the Federal Government, the Minister of Works, and members of the National Assembly to urgently award contracts and commence reconstruction of critical federal roads across Delta State.

“The lives of Deltans and all road users matter,” the statement said.
