The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC has slated Wednesday 10th March, 2021, for massive protests across the country to resist the planned removal of Minimum Wage from the Exclusive list of the Constitution to the Concurrent list by the National Assembly.
This notice was communicated by the Chairman of Delta State Council of NLC, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku while briefing the State Executive Council members of the decision of the National body.
In Delta State, the protest is to put the State House of Assembly on notice should the bill find its way to the State Houses of Assembly for ratification, they should reject it.
“According to Ofobruku, we do not need the obnoxious bill from House of Representatives which seeks to remove the power of workers to negotiate their salary increments and put it in the hands of some Governors who never in the first instance wanted workers to survive. We must stop the bill from seeing the light of day.”
While briefing members of SEC with regards to the September 2020 fuel increase, the NLC Chairman said the price has come to stay. However, he stated that the present position of Labour on the matter is that the Federal Government should fix the nation’s refineries and increase it’s production capacity.
On electricity tariff, he reported that the discussion was still ongoing, adding that while Labour still insists on total reversal, Government had opted to remove N2.80k.
Furthermore, Ofobruku charged members of SEC to learn how to manage information, maintaining that sometimes it was heartbreaking to discover that comments made in good faith were misrepresented.
The Chairman however, reiterated his call for members of Congress to be mobilized for the protest, adding that for such all important protest to succeed it would be predicated on the mass mobilization of members to participate.
