Students Should Be Allowed To Drive Into Campus, But With Control –DELSU VC

Vice-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has faulted the decision of some tertiary institutions in Nigeria that stopped students from driving their cars into the campus.

Prof. Egwunyenga who noted that “institutions have their different policies,” said: “It is about control; I don’t believe in outright ban because we are training them to be adults. So they must be part of the process.”

The VC who said this while answering a question asked by a journalist during a press conference recently, added: “I don’t think it is a crime for a student to own a vehicle. Instead, I am interested in ensuring that there is control so that we don’t run into problems because they are young people.”

According to him, instead of a ban in DELSU, his administration ensured that for any student to drive into the campus, they need to have a permit.

His words: “They are to go to the Works Department, pay the necessary fee of N2000 and fill the form. They fill in their particulars and provide their passport so that we can verify that they are our students, own the vehicle and not that they stole it. We also confirm if they have a driver’s license and then we issue them the permit and it is only with that they can drive into the campus.”

He revealed that there are many students yet to get the permit and are thus not allowed to drive into the campus.

“Once you are processed and screened, we cannot discriminate against you; it is wrong. We allow them drive in but with rules. They are to keep to speed limits and not allowed to drive in before 6a.m and beyond 7p.m,” the VC said.
