Ughelli North Chairman Leads Thorough Cleaning At Main Market In Special Sanitation Exercise

Ughelli, Delta State — In a significant initiative to enhance public health and environmental conditions, Olorogun (Barr.) Jaro Movudu Egbo Ksc, the Executive Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, launched an extensive cleaning operation on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Ughelli Main Market and Goat Meat Section in the Market.
The focus of this initiative is a deep cleaning of public spaces and drainage systems to tackle persistent waste and environmental hazards.
The sanitation exercise extended to key locations including the Otovwodo Community Market, Shop Fair Mall, and Wilma’s Filling Station.
This effort is crucial in managing water flow in market drainages and addressing flooding challenges that have increasingly affected the area, particularly during the rainy season.
During the event, Egbo emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal practices among traders.
He challenged the prevailing mindset that vendors must sell in the street to attract customers, stating, “The notion of ‘if I don’t sell in the middle of the road, I won’t sell at all’ must change.”
He pointed out that over 200 market stalls remain vacant as traders prefer to occupy the roadways, which obstructs traffic and sanitation efforts.
Egbo reassured vendors that customers would adapt to purchasing from designated areas within the markets.
The Executive Chairman announced that the clean-up initiative will continue into next week, starting Monday, with a focus on clearing drains and gutters to prevent future flooding in the markets.
This ongoing effort reflects the council’s commitment to addressing environmental sanitation concerns that have long troubled the Ughelli North community.
Key officials from the Ughelli North Local Government Council, including Vice Chairman Chief Mrs. Maggy Atano, Leader of the 8th Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okeoghene Prosper Ajero, Chief of Staff, Sir Prince Elvis Oharisi (JP), and Supervisor for Environment and Beautification, Hon. Lucky Oborayeruvwe, HOD, Environmental Health Department: Mrs. Victory Ikpebaku; Special Adviser on Environment: Hon. Onovughe Onokpasa; principal secretary to the chairman, Olorogun fidelis Erhiurhore, Supervisors, NULGE Chairman: Comrade Nancy Enakirheri, among others were present to support the exercise, highlighting the collaborative approach to community sanitation.
