Egbo’s ‘No Rest Until Ughelli Is Clean’ Pledge Signals Bold Leadership

The Executive Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Olorogun (Barr.) Jaro Movudu Egbo, KSC, on Saturday led a major environmental sanitation exercise across strategic locations in the LGA, demonstrating his administration’s firm commitment to restoring cleanliness and public hygiene.

The sanitation exercise began at dawn, starting from Otovwodo Market, one of Ughelli’s busiest commercial centres, where the chairman, accompanied by council officials, environmental officers, sanitation workers, and volunteers, supervised the clearing of blocked drainage systems and waste evacuation.

The operation extended to several other areas including Ekrejebor Road, Oveto Street, Upper Afiesere Road, Shell Oyibo Street, the waterway beside the Glass House along Ughelli-Patani Road, Ughelli Main Market, Shopfair, and the Wilmas Filling Station axis.

Unauthorized structures were pulled down, and some non-compliant business premises were temporarily shut down by environmental regulations.

In a resolute tone during the exercise, Chairman Egbo declared:
“What I did on the first day is what I will do until the last day of my mandate. So once the town is clean, I will rest. If the town is not clean, I won’t rest.”

The chairman’s statement struck a chord with many residents and traders, who commended his hands-on approach.
A trader at Ughelli Main Market said, “Since Chairman Egbo assumed office, we’ve seen real change. Today’s sanitation was serious and well-organized. We are happy to support this.”

The exercise is part of a broader environmental plan initiated by the current administration, which includes:

*Public education campaigns on hygiene*

*Enforcement of environmental laws*

*Stakeholder engagement across communities*

Speaking to the press, Mrs. Victory Ikpibako, Head of Environment for the local government, applauded both the leadership of the chairman and the cooperation of the people, emphasizing that cleanliness is a collective responsibility.

In a related development, Chairman Egbo visited the Ughelli North Township Stadium during the sanitation tour and expressed deep concern over its deteriorated condition. Once a breeding ground for Olympic talents, the facility has become dilapidated and unusable.

Egbo pledged to draw the attention of the Delta State Government through the State Sports Council, seeking immediate support for the stadium’s renovation and reconstruction.

“This stadium is a historical asset to the community. It deserves urgent restoration for the benefit of our youth and athletes,” he said.

Saturday’s clean-up exercise reflects a broader vision of the Egbo-led administration to entrench sanitation, civic responsibility, and infrastructure renewal across Ughelli North.

According to the chairman, the campaign will be sustained throughout his tenure to make Ughelli a cleaner, healthier, and more habitable environment for all.
