Directorate Of Chieftaincy Affairs Overrules Obi Of Ubulu-Uku Suspension Of Onishe

The Deputy Governor of Delta State has invalidated the suspension of Chief Asika James Onwordi as the Onishe Ezemu of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, citing lack of due process.

In a letter dated August 19, 2025, the Permanent Secretary, on behalf of the Deputy Governor, stated that the suspension cannot be upheld as the Directorate of Chieftaincy Affairs was not furnished with the necessary report and minutes of meeting from the investigative committee set up by the Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom to investigate allegations against Chief Onwordi.

The letter acknowledged the Obi’s prerogative to discipline erring chiefs, but emphasized that due process must be followed. Specifically, the Obi is required to ensure that the committee investigating the allegations against Chief Onwordi provides a report containing the minutes of meeting, confirming that Chief Onwordi was given a fair hearing and found culpable.

The Delta State Government has directed that the status quo be maintained to ensure peace in the kingdom, pending further review of the matter. The suspension of gazetted chiefs, the letter noted, is the sole responsibility of the Delta State Executive Council in collaboration with the State House of Assembly.

The development underscores the importance of adherence to due process and the rule of law in traditional institutions, and the Delta State Government’s commitment to ensuring that the rights of all parties are protected.
