DELSU Students Rave As SUG Launches Free Meal Scheme For 2,000 Delsuites

About 2,000 students gathered at the Pre-degree Hall premises last Friday when the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka launched a free meal programme for its members.

Tagged “Operation Feed 2,000 Delsuites”, the programme was sponsored by the SUG Director of Welfare to provide free breakfast for students.

Our observation showed that the students started trooping into the venue as early as 8am and were offered basic breakfast menu, including bread and tea, when the feeding officially commenced.

Comr. Angel Nnabife, the SUG Welfare Director, told our reporter that the breakfast programme was aimed at fostering community spirit and reminding students the need to avoid skipping breakfast despite their busy schedules.

According to Nnabife, many students leave their hostels for lectures by as early as 6am to 7am, not having enough time to prepare for and take their breakfast.

“Some even go as far as eating breakfast during dinner time just because they were in class all day”, she said.

“What the SUG has done is to showcase its commitment by giving back to the students, reminding them that the school cares about their welfarism’.

The union leader added that the gesture was not only about the food but also serves as a constant reminder to cultivate a sense of belonging and camaraderie among the students body.

Narrating the build up to the event, Nnabife disclosed that the programme was partly sponsored by individuals and corporate organizations, praising the students for their peaceful conduct.

“This event was highly backed up by sponsorships and partnership. I was able to get support from different places like DELSU foods, Ellison and Access Bank. Some comrades in the school also gave towards the event and even my family supported too. In all, we were able to raise seven (7) figures for the purpose of the event.

“Our budget was for 2,000 students and though the turn up was not up to 2,000, the considerable large number of students who came made the event a huge success.

“The crowd control was good; students came in batches, littel by little and were well organised. There was no (incidence of) fighting, no pushing; everything was in order.

“There students were also very appreciative of the initiative, it is not everyday you see a Students’ Union Government that wants to give back but this administration wants to work for the students and not take from them”.

Commenting on the event, the President of National Association of Science Students at DELSU, Hon. Godmission Oghon expressed surprised at the large turn out of students, praising the leadership of the SUG for prioritizing students’ wellbeing.

He said, “I was not expecting the turn up and more students are still on their way, we all owe this to our lovely SUG President Comr. Kingsley Dumuje who is such a beautiful soul”.

Also, a-100 level student of Industrial Chemistry, who simply identified herself as Precious, expressed excitement over the free meal programme.

“I’m very excited to be part of this event; I was not even expecting that the school could pull off something like this even though students indirectly paid for all these but at least the SUG is giving back to the community”, she observed.

“The turn up was massive, the food was amazing, all thanks to the wonderful SUG President and his team”, added Debbie, a-300 level student of Pharmacy.
