Delta Police Launch Violent Complaint Response Unit, Reorganises Tactical Operations

The Delta State Police Command has established a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a broader restructuring of its operational framework aimed at improving efficiency, discipline, and accountability across the state.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Bright Edafe, the initiative followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to enhance operational effectiveness and strengthen public confidence in policing.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said the creation of the VCRU forms a key part of the command’s renewed strategy to ensure swift and professional handling of violent incidents and high-risk situations across Delta State.

As part of the take-off process, selected personnel nominated into the unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme. During the training, the Commissioner of Police personally addressed the officers, charging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.

The officers were also taken through a series of key lectures, including sessions delivered by the officer in charge of the Legal Department, who provided guidance on legal frameworks, use of force, and compliance with extant laws.
In addition, the personnel were retrained on arms handling, musketry, and the lawful use of firearms, with emphasis placed on responsibility, restraint, and operational safety.

CP Oyeniyi emphasised that the reforms are aimed at deepening professional policing, restoring public confidence, and ensuring that violent incidents are responded to swiftly and effectively.
He warned that negligence, misconduct, or abuse of human rights would not be tolerated, stressing that discipline and accountability remain central to the command’s operations.
