Outrage As Rights Activist Alleges Extrajudicial Killing By Police Team In Effurun

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has raised alarm over the alleged brutal extrajudicial killing of an unidentified young man by a police team attached to the Area Command in Effurun, Delta State.

According to Gwamnishu, the incident occurred yesterday and involved one Usman Nuhu alongside other officers, whom he accused of carrying out the fatal attack on the victim under unclear circumstances.

He alleged that Usman Nuhu, who was formerly attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), previously known as SARS, has a history of multiple allegations bordering on extrajudicial killings and excessive use of force.

Gwamnishu further claimed that Nuhu had earlier served at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Illah but was reportedly transferred from the division due to repeated cases of misconduct and brutality.

Although Usman Nuhu is said to be currently in police custody, the activist insisted that he did not act alone, alleging that other officers involved in the incident are being protected from investigation.

He expressed concern over what he described as strong indications of an ongoing cover-up, stressing that justice can only be achieved if all officers linked to the incident are identified and made to face the law.

Gwamnishu called on relevant authorities, including the police hierarchy and human rights bodies, to ensure a transparent investigation into the matter and bring an end to the growing cases of extrajudicial killings in the country.

He maintained that accountability is necessary not only to secure justice for the deceased but also to restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.
