DELSU Holds 121st Inaugural Lecture, As VC Hails Atonuje’s Impact As Mathematical Scientist
By Ese Umukoro
Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has lauded Professor Augustine Omoghaghare Atonuje, for his impactful career as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and the University at large.
Professor Asagba made this commendation at the 121st in the series of inaugural lectures of the University which took place on Thursday, 20th August, 2026 at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Aviedo Atakpo, Professor Asagba noted that the impact of Professor Atonuje’s teaching has earned him the distinction of being regarded by his students as the best lecturer.
He commended the inaugural lecturer for his remarkable contribution to the lives of his students and urged him to sustain his good work of teaching, mentoring and impacting lives.
Delivering his lecture earlier on the topic: “Intrinsic and External White Noise: Mathematical Twindles and Paradigm for Relevance, Development and Recognition”, Professor Atonuje, who is also the Provost of Oleh Campus of the University, argued that the concept of white noise was attributed to a Scottish Botanist called Robert Brown in 1827, further adding that white noise represents the random movement of pollen grains on the surface of water. This concept was later expanded by an American mathematician named Norbert Wiener who investigated the mathematical properties of the movement of the one-dimensional mass of pollen grain to give it a mathematical understanding. Subsequently, Norbert Wiener developed it into what is now known in mathematics as stochastic process.
The inaugural lecturer then explained that the stochastic process occurs whenever some physical phenomenon constantly undergoes small random fluctuations or disturbances.
Continuing, Professor Atonuje pointed out that, it is a sequence of uncorrelated random variables with zero mean and some finite variance. The Professor of Stochastic Analysis and Application further clarified that white noise is used to perturb or disturb a dynamic system in order to bring some manner of changes in the behaviour of the system. Professor Atonuje, also posited that the application of white noise or random fluctuations is vital for national development as it can produce frameworks to model systems influenced by randomness, uncertainty and continuous change which occur in the real world. Professor Atonuje concluded that by embracing the inherent randomness of our world and applying the white noise principle, humans can move from reactive crisis management to proactive national management.
Other highlights of the 121st inaugural lecture were the decoration of the inaugural lecturer, Professor Augustine Omoghaghare Atonuje with the prestigious medal of inaugural lecturers of the University by the Vice Chancellor, special musical rendition by the Department of Music, photo session of the inaugural lecturer with Principal Officers of the university as well as with family members and friends.
